It’s not always black and white

A solo exhibition of paintings from Kimberly Kiel

March 20 – April 4, 2020

Woodlands Gallery presents, “it’s not always black and white”, a solo exhibition featuring new work from Kimberly Kiel. There are no rules in this Saskatchewan artist’s world of abstracted trees, flowers, and figures. Her fervent use of colour and texture allows us to indulge in the spontaneous side of life.

Working mainly with a palette knife and abundant piles of paint, Kiel shapes her impasto paintings into a world of dense forests, lush bouquets, and grand cocktail parties. She plays with light and depth by contrasting bold colours with pastels, and hard edges with soft waves. Punchy colours and sensuous oil paints are whipped onto the canvas with fantastic energy, creating images that leap from the surface, inviting us in.

Not always a visual artist, Kiel worked in financial planning for over ten years, and in 2003 sold her practice in favour of something new. With a creative background in music and dance, she tried an art class and has been painting ever since. Her work is represented by galleries across Canada and Switzerland and found in corporate and private collections across Canada and internationally.
